Best Time to Visit Japan: A Month-by-Month 2026 Guide
The best time to visit Japan depends on what you want to see. Cherry blossom, autumn colours, snow — a data-first breakdown for 2026.
The best time to visit Japan depends entirely on what you want to see. Japan has four dramatic seasons and a country that stretches from sub-tropical Okinawa to snowbound Hokkaido. Below: the honest month-by-month guide, drawn from ten years of climate records.
March – May: Cherry blossom season (the classic answer)
For most first-time visitors, late March to mid-April is the best time to travel to Japan. Cherry blossom (sakura) moves from south to north — Tokyo and Kyoto peak roughly in late March, Osaka a few days later, and Sapporo in early May. Tokyo in April averages 19°C by day, cool evenings, and around 130mm rain across the month.
Downsides: Crowded, expensive, hotel prices double. Book six months ahead.
September – November: Autumn colours (the sophisticated answer)
Autumn (koyo) in Japan is arguably even more beautiful than cherry blossom, and considerably less crowded. Kyoto in November averages 15°C by day, brilliantly clear skies, low rainfall. Temples like Tofuku-ji and Eikan-do put on their annual maple display. This is the ideal time to visit Japan if you can only go once.
December – February: Winter (Hokkaido and snow)
Winter is the best month to visit Japan if you ski or want the powder-snow experience. Niseko, Hakuba, and the Sapporo Snow Festival (early February) are the main draws. Hokkaido temperatures drop to -8°C by night. Southern cities like Tokyo remain mild (9°C daytime highs).
June – August: Rainy season and summer
June brings tsuyu — the rainy season. Not ideal. July and August are hot and humid (Tokyo 30°C+ with 70% humidity). But the summer festivals (matsuri) are wonderful — Kyoto's Gion Matsuri, Osaka's Tenjin Matsuri. If you can handle heat, August is culturally rich.
Which month is the best time to visit Japan overall?
- Late March – early April: Cherry blossom. The classic answer.
- Mid-November: Autumn colours. The connoisseur's answer.
- February: Winter, festivals, powder snow (if you ski).
