The best months to visit Crete are May, June, July, August. Late April into May when Samaria Gorge opens for the season, wild sage covers the Lasithi plateau, and Elafonisi pink sand isn't yet an August traffic jam.

July runs the highest averages in Crete, with typical daytime highs of 23°C (73°F). Cretans siesta hard from 2-6pm; villages like Anogia go silent, and locals swim Preveli or Balos only at 7am or after 7pm to dodge the burn.

January brings the lowest averages, with daytime highs near 4°C (40°F). January snow on Psiloritis and White Mountains; Anogia mountain village becomes a raki-and-fireplace scene, and ferries to Piraeus cancel for meltemi.

January typically records the highest monthly rainfall — around 158mm on average. November storms flood the Chania old harbor and shut the E75 highway near Georgioupoli; mountain villages lose power for days but always recover.

Crete, Greece has mild summers, cold winters, moderate seasonal rainfall. Skip Malia and Hersonissos party strips; real Crete lives in Chania old town, Rethymno backstreets, and mountain villages like Zaros or Argiroupoli.
