The city
§ I
A destination worth the flight.

Aspen's calendar is dictated by Independence Pass. The road buries under snow from November, mud season empties the town twice, and only mid-June onward does the Continental Divide loop to Leadville open cleanly for the summer that locals actually plan around.

Mid-July is the sweet spot: the pass has fully cleared, the Music Festival tent on Castle Creek is running, and hikers get a clean pre-dawn window on Cathedral Lake before the 2pm monsoon lightning that turns above-treeline routes into a gamble. Ride the free RFTA bus, hit Woody Creek Tavern for green chile, and take the mandatory Maroon Bells shuttle from Aspen Highlands between 8am and 5pm.

Avoid April and November outright. Mud season shuts most restaurants, gondolas run reduced hours, and Aspen proper empties to its second-home skeleton. Even calling ahead won't save a dinner plan when the kitchen simply isn't open.

For 2026, book the second or third week of July, front-load hikes before noon, and pack an SPF lip balm with zinc for the altitude. Snowmass patios burn through unprotected lips in an afternoon at 2400m, and Grottos slabs on the Roaring Fork are the local swim reset.
