A destination worth the flight.
Cologne breathes with the Rhine. Winter damp settles in the valley from November, Karneval takes over life from January 11 onward, spring reopens the Rhine promenade cafes, summer floods the beer gardens with 0.2L Kolsch glasses, and autumn brings the Hochwasser gauge back to every local news screen.
Mid-May is when the promenade fully reopens, the Cathedral steps aren't rain-slicked, and Fruh am Dom hits peak outdoor seating. Cross the river to Deutz for the honest cathedral photo, drink in the Belgisches Viertel where actual Cologners eat, and remember Kolsch comes in 0.2L only — never order a half-litre.
Avoid January's clammy Rhine cold and the Karneval-prep bar chaos that dominates once the season officially opens on November 11. Avoid October in flood years too, when the Hochwasser at Deutzer Brucke can push past the 8m warning line and inundate the Altstadt within hours.
For 2026, aim for the last week of May or the first week of June. Bring a sturdy tote for Weiberfastnacht kamelle if you extend to February, take the KVB tram over any taxi, and plan a Rheinauhafen strip evening for whichever July night breaks 28C.
