The city
§ I
A destination worth the flight.

Helsinki's year is an experiment in daylight extremes. January locks the city into 3:30pm sunsets and -15C harbor freezes, June stretches to 19 hours of light, Juhannus midsummer weekend empties the entire capital, and October brings the pre-kaamos rain that cyclists commute through in full waterproofs.

June and early July are the days Finns wait all year for. Suomenlinna fills with picnics, the Kallio terraces overflow, and Loyly sauna's sea plunge queues 90 minutes on hellepaiva heatwave days. Respect the 2m personal space at bus stops, stay silent in the sauna, and skip Alko trips on Sundays — the state liquor stores never open.

Avoid the last week of June if you don't book ahead; everything shuts as Finns flee to summer cottages for Juhannus. Avoid January outright unless you specifically want -15C tram-window fog and a 6-hour daylight window centered on Kamppi mall.

For 2026, aim for the second or third week of June, or the first ten days of September when the light softens and Kallio quiets down. Pack a wool base layer even in summer — ferry decks drop to 8C after dark — and try salmiakki once before dismissing it.
