The city
§ I
A destination worth the flight.

Malta's year rides between two Mediterranean extremes. January storms bring 100kmh gusts that close the Cirkewwa ferry to Gozo, August xlokk winds push 40C air off the Sahara, and the shoulder seasons deliver everything a limestone island promises without the survival math.

Late April warms the sea to 19C just as the Mnajdra temple aligns with the equinox sunrise and carob trees flower across the Dingli Cliffs. This is when village festas begin their summer rotation, when ftira sandwiches at Nenu the Artisan Baker taste right, and when the Three Cities across the harbor from Valletta feel like Valletta before the cruise ships. Take the dghajsa water taxi from Customs House for two euros.

Avoid January's ferocious Gozo storms — Comino is unreachable and the outdoor calendar collapses. Avoid August's xlokk, when locals only swim at Ghar Lapsi rock pools at dawn and 40C makes the Valletta backstreets impassable until pastizzi hour after 9pm.

For 2026, target the last two weeks of April or the first fortnight of October. Pack reef shoes for Wied il-Ghasri's limestone entries, keep Sunday free for rabbit stew on Gozo, and plan the Msida roundabout drive around any November storm alert — drainage predates the British and roads become torrents in 30 minutes.
