§ I
A destination worth the flight.

Rovaniemi's year is the Arctic in miniature. January drops below -30C and Ranua zoo closes early, February and March lock in the reliable husky-trail snow, June brings the midnight sun that never actually sets, and August tips into sudden thundershowers that soak the Kemijoki riverbank.

February through mid-March is the window that repays the trip: Napapiiri Santa Village stays open until midnight through polar twilight, the Arctic Circle husky trails run on packed snow, and aurora nights punch through the Alvarin kortteli grid that Alvar Aalto rebuilt after the Germans burned Rovaniemi in 1944. Order poronkaristys at Nili, never at Santa Village restaurants, and never photograph reindeer on the E75 without waving to the herder first — Sami families track individual animals by ear-notch.

Skip January outright unless you have gear rated below -30C. Ranua closes early, Arktikum and Korundi become the entire day, and even locals limit outdoor time. Skip November, when polar night has arrived but the snow hasn't fully set for husky routes.

For 2026, target early March for aurora and husky sledding, or the last week of June for midnight-sun swims at Ounaskoski beach at 11pm. Pack a balaclava with a fleece-lined breath hole — regular scarves freeze solid within 20 minutes at -25C — and layer against mosquito swarms at summer dusk-that-never-comes.
