The city
§ I
A destination worth the flight.

Salzburg's year folds around the Salzach valley's weather quirks. Winter brings Christkindlmarkt gluhwein and a funicular ride to Hohensalzburg fortress, spring soaks Getreidegasse in Schnurlregen — a thin persistent drizzle that lasts days — summer explodes into Festspiele opera on Domplatz, and October returns the drizzle before the market cycle restarts.

Late July through August is when the Salzburger Festspiele takes over every church and courtyard, when Jedermann performances fill Domplatz, and when the Almkanal swimming channels or the Untersberg cable car become the mandatory heat escape. Cross the Salzach to Lehen for the Thursday Schrannenmarkt where locals actually shop, greet shopkeepers with Gruss Gott (never Hallo), and buy Mozartkugel at any Konditorei rather than queuing at Furst.

Skip April, when Schnurlregen sets in for full weeks and the Getreidegasse cobbles never quite dry. Skip November too, when the drizzle continues but the Christkindlmarkt hasn't yet opened to justify the damp.

For 2026, target the last two weeks of July for Festspiele or the first ten days of September for shoulder-season quiet. Pack a compact umbrella with wind vents — Salzach valley gusts flip cheap umbrellas inside out within a block — and route a heatwave day up the Untersberg where it's ten degrees cooler at the summit.
