The city
§ I
A destination worth the flight.

Tromso at 69 degrees north lives on extreme daylight cycles. Eleven complete years (2015-2025) show January averaging -4C — remarkably mild for latitude thanks to the Gulf Stream, July at 13C during the midnight sun window when the sun never sets from May 20 to July 22. Polar night runs November 27 to January 15 with zero direct sunlight for 49 days.

February, March, and September are the strongest windows depending on your goal. February and March deliver aurora borealis at peak visibility with dark skies still dominating, longer daylight than December-January for daytime dogsledding, and reliable snow conditions on Kvaloya. September brings 8C with the aurora season starting September 21, autumn colors across the Lyngenfjord, and pre-winter hiking on Storsteinen. The aurora window runs September 21 to April 15 — but midwinter darkness limits daytime options.

December and May are the transition months to skip. December sits in polar night with no direct sun, cloud cover 22 days out of 31, and aurora obscured by weather most nights. May brings mud season — snow melting, ferries transitioning, and neither midnight sun nor northern lights available.

For 2026, book March aurora week by October 2025 — Tromso Lodge availability disappears first. September remains the year's most-daylight-plus-aurora combination.

By the month
§ IV

Flight prices, month by month.

Estimated round-trip fares from London, based on a 7-day stay. Rule-of-thumb pricing — the cheapest windows tend to be the shoulder months, so a shift of a fortnight can pay for a hotel.

★ June looks like the cheapest month for flights to Tromsø — often £120 less than the peak. Fares refresh daily; live prices below.
