Zermatt

Zermatt's year is dictated by the Matterhorn and by the fact that no cars have ever entered the village — you park at Tasch and take the shuttle train the last 5km. Winter locks the Klein Matterhorn at -15C on Europe's highest cable-car station, spring melts the low routes into slush, summer opens the Five Lakes trail from Blauherd, and autumn shuts the huts before the Cervinia cross-border ski opens.

Late February through March is when the Matterhorn shows daily on 90% of days and the Skiing Around the Matterhorn route to Cervinia opens with dry powder. July offers the summer alternative: 25C afternoons on the Five Lakes trail, cheese fondue at Whymper Stube named after the 1865 first ascent whose graves are in the English Church cemetery, and rosti at Chez Vrony above Findeln on the sun terrace.

Skip April, when the mid-mountain slush is unskiable and the summer huts haven't reopened. Skip November too, when the population of 5,800 empties out to a skeleton crew and the Gornergrat cog railway runs a reduced schedule.

For 2026, target the first three weeks of March for guaranteed Matterhorn visibility, or the second half of July for the Five Lakes traverse. Pack acetazolamide for the Klein Matterhorn cable-car ascent — 2,300m in 30 minutes leaves unprepared visitors nauseated at the summit ice palace — and never call it 'the Alps' in front of locals. It's the Valais, or specifically the Mattertal.
