Nuremberg

Nuremberg's year is Franconian, not Bavarian — a distinction locals will correct if you order a Weissbier. Winter regularly snows the Kaiserburg into a postcard, spring floods the Pegnitz with May thunderstorms, summer hits 28C with Rotbier beer gardens at Kettensteg, and late November opens the original Christkindlesmarkt with its child angel ceremony.

Mid-May through July is the outdoor window: the Kaiserburg free viewpoint stays reliably dry, Wohrder See swimming opens, and the Sebalder Altstadt beer gardens fill with locals cycling in from the Frankische Schweiz. Order three finger-sized Bratwurst in a bun or twelve on pewter at Bratwurst Roslein, and drink Rotbier at Hausbrauerei Altstadthof — the dark red beer is only brewed here.

Skip January's -3C snow if you're not there for the Documentation Center at the former Nazi rally grounds, which stays heated and grimly compelling year-round. Skip early November, when the Christkindlesmarkt hasn't opened yet but the damp cold has already settled and the Handwerkerhof tourist trap is your only warm option near the station.

For 2026, target June or the first two weeks of July. Pack grippy boots if you extend to December — the cobbled slope from Kaiserburg to Hauptmarkt ices predictably and salt is used sparingly — and time an evening at Kettensteg for the longest daylight of the year.
